You don't, not immediately. That's why I offer a free initial consultation. We'll talk about what's brought you to counselling, and you'll get a sense of whether I feel like someone you could talk to. Trust your gut. If it doesn't feel right, that's okay. Finding the right fit matters more than finding someone quickly.
The first paid session is an assessment. It's the same length and price as regular sessions, but we're focused on understanding where you're at and what you're hoping to get from therapy. We'll talk about what's brought you here, what's been going on, and start to work out a plan that makes sense for you. You're in control of whether you're looking for short-term or longer-term work, and we'll review that regularly.
Usually weekly or fortnightly, depending on what works for you and what you need. Some people benefit from the consistency of weekly sessions, especially at the start. Others find fortnightly gives them more time to process between sessions. We'll figure it out together.
Yes, with a few exceptions. If I'm concerned you're at serious risk of harm to yourself or someone else, or if there's a safeguarding issue involving a child or vulnerable adult, I have a duty to break confidentiality. I'd talk to you about this first, wherever possible. Otherwise, what you say stays between us.
I keep a small number of concessionary slots available. If cost is a barrier to accessing therapy, get in touch and we can talk about what might be possible.
I need 48 hours' notice. If you cancel with less notice than that, you'll be charged the full session fee. I know life happens, but therapy needs consistency to work, and holding that time for you means I'm not available for other clients.
